Which Shopify product content terms should every merchant know?

Alt text
A short written description of an image, stored in the image’s alt attribute. Screen readers read it aloud, and search engines use it to understand what the image shows.
Answer engine
An AI system, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews, that replies to a question with a written answer instead of only a list of links.
Answer-first copy
Writing that states the direct answer or key fact in the first sentence or two, before supporting detail, so readers and AI systems can quote it.
Bulk editor
Shopify’s spreadsheet-style admin view for editing a field, such as price or SEO title, across many products at once.
Canonical tag
A link element that tells search engines which URL is the main version of a page. Shopify adds canonical tags automatically, for example when a product is reachable through several collection URLs.
Collection
A group of products in Shopify, either manual or automated by conditions such as tag or product type. Collection pages are important category landing pages for SEO.
Compare-at price
The original price shown crossed out next to a lower sale price in Shopify. It should reflect a real previous price.
Conversion rate
The share of sessions or visitors that end in a purchase. Product page conversion is often measured alongside add-to-cart rate.
Crawler
An automated program that fetches web pages for a search engine or AI system, such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot.
CSV import
Uploading a spreadsheet file to create or update Shopify products in bulk. Products are matched by their handle.
Custom label
A Google Merchant Center attribute you define yourself, such as best-seller or clearance, used to group products in Shopping campaigns.
DefinedTerm
A schema.org type for a word or phrase with a definition, used on glossary pages to mark up each term.
E-E-A-T
Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness: concepts from Google’s search quality rater guidelines describing what makes content reliable.
FAQPage schema
Structured data that marks up a list of questions and answers on a page so search engines and AI systems can identify each pair.
GEO
Generative engine optimization: improving content so AI answer engines can find, understand and cite it.
Google Merchant Center
Google’s platform for uploading product data that powers Shopping ads, free product listings and other Google surfaces.
Google product category
A category from Google’s product taxonomy assigned to an item in a Shopping feed to help Google classify it.
GTIN
Global Trade Item Number, the barcode number assigned to a product, such as a UPC, EAN or ISBN. In Shopify it goes in the barcode field.
Handle
The URL-friendly part of a Shopify product or collection address, such as merino-crew-sweater in /products/merino-crew-sweater.
Hreflang
An attribute that tells search engines which language or regional version of a page to show. Shopify adds it for published languages in Markets.
Indexing
A search engine adding a page to its database so it can appear in results. Google Search Console shows which pages are indexed.
JSON-LD
A format for adding structured data to a page as a script block of JSON. It is the format Google recommends for schema markup.
Keyword
A word or phrase people type into a search engine. Product pages usually target one main keyword and related variations.
llms.txt
A proposed plain-text Markdown file at a site’s root that summarizes the site for language models. Support by major AI systems is still limited.
Meta description
The HTML summary of a page that search engines may show under the title in results. In Shopify it is edited under Search engine listing.
Metafield
A custom field in Shopify for storing extra information, such as material or care instructions, that themes and apps can display.
MPN
Manufacturer Part Number, an identifier used in Shopping feeds when a product has no GTIN.
Online Store 2.0
Shopify’s theme architecture that supports sections on every page, app blocks and metafield-driven content.
Product feed
A structured file or data connection that lists products and their attributes for channels such as Google Merchant Center or Meta.

Rich result
A search result enhanced with extra information such as price, availability or review stars, made possible by structured data.

Search Console
Google’s free tool that shows how a site performs in Google Search, including clicks, impressions and indexing issues.
SEO title
The page title shown in browser tabs and search results, set in Shopify’s Search engine listing section. It can differ from the product title.

SKU
Stock keeping unit, the merchant’s own code for tracking inventory of a specific product variant.

Free-form labels on Shopify products used for filtering, automated collections and internal organization.
Thin content
A page with little original, useful text, such as a product page with a single generic sentence or copied manufacturer copy.
Variant
A purchasable version of a product that differs by an option such as size, color or material, with its own SKU, price and inventory.
Variant image
An image assigned to a specific variant in Shopify so the page shows it when a shopper selects that option, and feeds can send it per item.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a product title and an SEO title?

The product title is the heading shown on the product page. The SEO title is the page title shown in search results and browser tabs. Shopify lets you set them separately.

Generative engine optimization: making product and content pages easy for AI answer engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity to find, understand and cite.

Can I link to a single glossary term?

Yes. Every term has its own anchor, so you can link to a definition directly, for example to the GTIN entry.

What is the difference between a GTIN and a SKU?

A GTIN is a global barcode number assigned to a product by the manufacturer. A SKU is an internal code a merchant creates to track its own inventory.
