What should every Shopify product description template include?
Whatever you sell, the same five blocks answer most pre-purchase questions. Keep the order consistent across your catalog so shoppers learn where to look, and so search engines and AI assistants can pick out the facts reliably.
- Hook (one or two sentences). What the product is, who it is for and the single biggest benefit. This is the sentence most likely to be quoted.
- Benefit bullets (three to five). Each bullet pairs a feature with what it does for the buyer.
- Specs block. Materials, dimensions, weight, compatibility, ingredients: whatever is measurable.
- Usage or care. How to use, wash, store or install it.
- Short FAQ. Two to four real questions, answered in a sentence or two each.
Structure matters more than most merchants think. In our 2026 study of 100 top Shopify product pages, 66% of descriptions had no headings or bullet lists, and 55% were too short or too long to pass our length check.
Which details matter most in each niche?
| Niche | Must-have facts | Common objection to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Fashion | Fabric and weight, fit, model height and size worn, size range | “Will it fit me?” |
| Beauty | Key ingredients, skin or hair type, volume, how to apply | “Will it suit my skin?” |
| Electronics | Compatibility, battery life, ports, what is in the box, warranty | “Will it work with my device?” |
| Home | Dimensions, materials, assembly, weight capacity, care | “Will it fit my space?” |
| Food and drink | Ingredients, allergens, net weight, storage, shelf life | “Is it safe for my diet?” |
Fashion product description template
Hook: The [product name] is a [fit] [product type] in [fabric] for [occasion or customer], designed to [main benefit].
- [Fabric feature], so it [benefit, e.g. stays soft after washing].
- [Cut or fit detail], which [benefit, e.g. sits neatly under a jacket].
- [Construction detail], for [benefit, e.g. no scratchy seams].
Fit and sizing: [True to size / runs small]. Model is [height] and wears size [S]. Available in [size range].
Materials and care: [Composition]. [Wash instructions].
Tip: put fit notes above the fold or next to the size selector. Fit uncertainty is a frequent reason fashion shoppers hesitate or return items, so the more precise you are, the better.

How to use: [Step 1], [step 2], [frequency].
Full ingredients: [INCI list]. Size: [volume].

Compatibility: Works with [list]. Not compatible with [list, if relevant].
In the box: [items]. Warranty: [length and terms].
For electronics, a specs table usually beats prose. Be explicit about what it does not work with; it prevents returns and builds trust.

Food labeling rules differ by country. Make sure what you write on the page matches the physical label.
How do I turn a template into a unique description?
- Collect the real facts first: supplier specs, your own measurements, customer questions and reviews.
- Fill the template, replacing every bracket with a specific value. Delete lines that do not apply rather than padding them.
- Rewrite the hook in your brand voice. This is the line that should sound least like a template.
- Add one detail no competitor page has: a measurement you took, a use case customers mention, a comparison with your other products.
- Write the SEO title and meta description separately (see our meta description guide).
- Check the page with the free product page grader, which flags length, structure, alt text and FAQ gaps.
What mistakes make templated descriptions fail?
- Identical paragraphs across products. Search engines may treat near-duplicate pages as thin, and shoppers notice.
- Unfilled brackets or placeholders. Proofread every batch, especially when using AI or CSV imports.
- Claims you cannot prove. “Best”, “clinically proven” or “eco-friendly” without evidence erode trust.
- Hiding specs in images. Text inside images is harder for search engines and assistive technology to read; put specs in HTML text.
Can AI fill these templates for me?
Yes, and it is one of the best uses of AI for product content: the template fixes the structure, and the AI drafts wording from your product data. The key is a review step. Nashrly reads the title, variants and existing copy from Shopify, drafts a structured description with SEO title and meta description, and lets you approve, edit or undo each change. Shopify’s built-in Shopify Magic can also draft single descriptions inside the product editor.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a Shopify product description be?
Long enough to answer the questions a shopper would ask before buying. For most products that is roughly 150 to 400 words, split into a short intro, bullets and a specs block. Technical products often need more; simple consumables need less.
Can I use the same template for every product?
Use the same structure, not the same sentences. Repeating identical paragraphs across products creates thin, duplicate content. Keep the headings and order consistent and write the facts fresh for each product.
Should product descriptions use headings and bullets?
Yes. Shoppers scan rather than read, and structure helps search engines and AI assistants extract facts. In our 2026 study, 66% of top Shopify product pages had descriptions without headings or bullet lists.
Do these templates work with AI writing tools?
Yes. Give the AI tool the template plus the real product facts, then review the draft for accuracy. The template keeps output consistent; the facts keep it useful and original.
